Colin Young: 'We were hammered in Nazi ambush'
As a member of the Royal Artillery, Colin Young landed in Normandy about a week after the Allied invasion had begun.
But it wasn't long before he saw his first action, as enemy troops on high ground put his unit under fire.
"They could see every move that we made.
"It was like picking rabbits off," he said.
Colin Young died on 14th June, 2024. His funeral, held in Plymouth, was supported by The British Legion and attended by flag bearers, a bugler and a bagpiper.
We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations.
The BBC is currently working on the project with a number of partners including the Normandy Memorial Trust and Royal British Legion. Some of the stories collected may be shared with our partners and used on BBC News platforms.
