Bus service scheme looks to reinstate rural routes

Bus passengers in Cumbria have been struggling with poor public transport links.

According to a recent Transport Select Committee report, external, bus services in rural areas are in "significant decline".

But a government-funded scheme called Bus Services Improvement Plus has enabled councils to bring back some routes.

The 516 service has increased public transport passenger numbers to Great Langdale by more than 15%, with Westmorland and Furness Council funding some additional early morning and late evening services every day.

It is hoped the 517, which only started recently and operates during weekends, will provide a similar benefit to Little Langdale and that more services can be added in the future.

The BBC joined passengers on board.

Correction 22 August: This article previously stated that Westmorland and Furness Council had stepped in to fund a weekend service for the 516. The article has been amended to make clear that the council are funding some additional early morning and late evening services every day for the 516 service and that the new 517 service which operates at the weekend may provide similar benefits to Little Langdale in the future.
