Newborn hippo recovering after 'rocky' start

A baby hippo born at a North Yorkshire zoo is recovering after what her keepers described as a "rocky start".

The calf, called Aurora, was taken to a veterinary hospital after staff at Flamingo Land, near Malton, became concerned her mother, Godzilla, was not feeding her.

After a 24-hour stay the two-week old calf, who was born on 8 May, was returned to the zoo where her keepers have been caring for her around the clock, with the hope of eventually reuniting her with her mother.

Park executive Ross Snipp said 25-year-old Godzilla was believed to be one of the oldest first-time mothers and had been the last remaining female of her lineage to have never bred.
