South Sudan celebrates independence

South Sudan has become the world's newest nation, after decades of conflict with the north.

Huge independence celebrations started as the clock struck midnight local time. The world's newest nation will also be one of the poorest, and there are still many sources of potential conflict with the Republic of Sudan.
