Former abductee on LRA commander Ongwen

A former abductee of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), Victoria Nyanjura, has spoken to BBC HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur about former LRA commander Dominic Ongwen.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague has accused Mr Ongwen of 70 charges, including crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed between 2002 and 2005 while he was a commander in the Lord’s Resistance Army.

He has pleaded not guilty and his trial is due to start in December 2016.

Ms Nyanjura was abducted by the LRA in 1996 when she was 14-years-old along with dozens of other school girls from a boarding school in northern Uganda.

She escaped in 2004, but during her abduction she knew Mr Ongwen.

Claiming to fight for a biblical state, the LRA led by Joseph Kony has killed more than 100,000 people and kidnapped more than 60,000 children during the three decade-long conflict which has spread to several of Uganda's neighbours.
