Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej has died at the age of 88, plunging his nation into deep mourning.

There were wails of grief from people who had gathered outside Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, where he had been treated.

Many people had spent days outside the hospital, wearing pink in the hope that it would bring good luck to the ailing monarch.

King Bhumibol has reigned for 70 years and is revered in Thailand.

He has been seen as a unifying figure in a country that has undergone much political upheaval during his reign.

Announcing his death, the Royal Household said he had died peacefully in hospital at 15:52 (08:52 GMT).

The prime minister says Thailand will observe a year-long mourning period.
