Gale-force weather up to 70mph hits Channel Islands

Gales of up to 70mph, coupled with heavy rain, are causing disruption across the Channel Islands, cancelling ferries and flights.

Winds were moving in from the Atlantic as a severe storm headed towards Britain, the Jersey Met Department said.

Forecasters have issued a storm force 10 warning with winds of up to 80mph.

Passengers travelling on Condor ferries between the Channel Islands and the UK have faced delays and cancellations.

Jersey Police have warned people to avoid using bicycles or motorbikes because of the strong winds.

A 63-year old man in Jersey was taken to hospital after the wind blew him off his bicycle as he left the Tunnel in St Helier. His injuries are through to be minor.

Trees have come down across the Channel Islands and a large trampoline was blown across a road in St Lawrence, Jersey.

Condor Ferries delayed the sailing of the Clipper from Portsmouth until it is able to berth in Guernsey and Jersey.

It is not expected to arrive in St Helier until 06:00 GMT on 24 December, delaying UK bound passengers.

Most rescheduled fast ferry services to France have been cancelled.
