A man's body has been discovered in a burning car in the Republic of Ireland.

The remains were discovered in the vehicle on Mount Andrew Rise in Lucan, County Dublin, on Monday at about 20:00 local time.

Emergency services were called to a car on fire on the street and the body of the man was subsequently found.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ is reporting that gardaí (police) are treating it as murder, although that has yet to be officially confirmed.

RTÉ's crime correspondent Paul Reynolds said the man's body was found in the passenger seat of the car.

"He appears to have sustained a head wound and the gardaí suspect he may have been shot," he said.

"They believe it's likely he got into the car with a person or people he trusted and driven to the place where his body was discovered.

"The car appears to have been set on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence."

The body remains at the scene and a post-mortem examination is to be carried out.

The area has been cordoned off for examination.
