Paid parking to be debated again by Guernsey States

When discussed in 2009 the proposals were rejected in favour of putting more tax on fuel

Paid parking could be back on the States of Guernsey agenda as the Environment Department has agreed to look at it again.

The issue has been debated numerous times in the past decade, but moves to introduce it have always been stopped.

Deputy Dave Jones seconded the motion that threw out paid parking last time it was debated.

He said it was right for it to be reconsidered, but that he was still not convinced it was the way forward.

Peter Roffey, a former deputy and long-time supporter of the idea, said he still believed it was the right move and the States needed to consider whether the island could really afford not to have paid parking.

When it was last discussed, in 2009, the proposals were thrown out in favour of more tax on fuel.
