Alderney States meeting abandoned due to low turnout

Alderney's September States meeting had to be abandoned on Wednesday because there were only six members present.

Under Alderney law there must be seven or more States members present for decisions to be considered legal.

Currently there are only nine, rather than ten, politicians as one has resigned.

Three were missing for personal reasons at the start of the States meeting, so the agenda was postponed until next month's meeting.

A new law is due to come into force later this year meaning in future Alderney States can meet with fewer members.
