Two of the Google Street View cars were vandalised during their visit to Guernsey.

They were on their second visit to the island to take pictures for the online mapping system.

The company said it took the incident extremely seriously and was working with the police to investigate the matter.

It said most of the photos had already been taken, but the cars would return to the island if necessary.

The visits, which had originally been expected in May, was delayed after the company admitted and apologised for collecting information from unsecured wireless networks over a three-year period.

The cars had used wi-fi to accurately map locations, but also collected information sent over non-encrypted networks.

No date has been set for images of Guernsey and Alderney, which one of the cars visited, to go live but it is expected to be a few months as people's faces and car number plates will be blurred to avoid any recognition.

Guernsey Police confirmed they were investigating the incident, which happened overnight on Wednesday.
