Guernsey States debates may be put online

Deputy Rihoy said a video feed could mean more understanding of the States

The States of Guernsey monthly meetings could soon be available to listen and watch online, says the States Assembly and Constitution Committee chairman.

Currently audio of the meetings is only available on BBC Guernsey's 1116AM frequency.

Deputy Ivan Rihoy said the change would allow islanders to better engage with the political process.

The Home Department is working with the law officers to iron out legal issues which currently prevent the move.

Deputy Rihoy said: "I can't imagine any States member being against the idea or the concept of any States debate being totally accessible to everybody by internet, by radio and by television if you like."

He said once the legal issues had been solved he saw no barrier to the service being implemented straight away.

Deputy Rihoy said: "The sooner the better because it will certainly bring the States meeting into homes a lot more keenly and people will be able to see what is happening in the chamber.

"Sometimes listening to the radio you don't get the feeling when a person is speaking, his or her expressions and the way things are put across... and perhaps have a better understanding."

Last week the States voted overwhelming in favour of looking into how the island's government could be more open and transparent.
