Guernsey electricity prices may rise, warns regulator

The last rise in prices was 1p per unit in February

Electricity prices in Guernsey could increase next April, the regulator has warned.

The Office of Utility Regulation (OUR) said colder weather, volatile energy prices and an increase in demand were behind the possible move.

It said Guernsey Electricity proposed to bring forward investment in new generation capacity, which would impact on consumers' bills.

The OUR said it would consult before making any change in pricing controls.

Michael Byrne, director of regulation, said: "In the past the OUR has carried out detailed scrutiny of Guernsey Electricity's efficiency and its operations.

"We are minded to take an alternative approach this time given the information we already have from previous reviews.

"Rather than argue the detail of the investment programme and set benchmark costs, an onus will be placed on the company to demonstrate that its investment has been delivered effectively and is delivering benefits for customers."
