Channel Islands' television goes digital

The digital switchover of television signals in the Channel Islands has been completed.

Analogue television, which had provided the island with four channels, was switched off at about 0130 GMT.

That service was replaced by a new digital signal, offering extra stations.

Services across the islands were made available in stages with the work completed before 1500 GMT.

Bill Taylor from Digital UK, which is responsible for the switchover, said: "All of the Channel Islands has completed switchover to digital TV ahead of schedule and without any technical problems.

"Islanders have taken switchover in their stride."

He said: "Some people returning from work this evening should remember to tune in their Freeview boxes or Freeview televisions to receive digital channels, but televisions receiving a satellite signal are unaffected.

"I would just like to say thank you to the islanders of Guernsey, Alderney and Sark for helping to make switchover so smooth."
