Spending £30,000 to maintain Guernsey's flumes would be a waste of time, if the money could not be raised to replace them in two years' time, the Culture and Leisure minister has said.

Deputy Mike O'Hara said his department would have preferred to keep the flumes at Beau Sejour leisure centre open.

He said he fully supported the campaign to raise money to save the chutes.

However, he added the money would be completely wasted if the 20-year-old flumes broke in the next two years.

The water slides are set to close at the end of the year as the Culture and Leisure Department looks to save money.

Sisters Kelly and Lynsey de Carteret have appealed to businesses to come up with the £30,000 needed to keep the flumes open for a further two years.

The cost of replacing the flumes, which have been in place for 20 years has been estimated at £140,000.
