Guernsey States keep recycling target at 50%

The target for the recycling rate in Guernsey will remain at 50%, the States has decided.

It follows the failure to achieve the target, set in 2007, of increasing domestic and commercial waste recycling to 50% by the end of 2010.

Deputies decided the current target would continue until replaced by any targets set by the new waste strategy.

The increase in recycling has seen the estimated life of the Mont Cuet landfill rise by nine years to 2021.

The third waste strategy in 16 years is being developed after the previous two, both of which involved waste-to-energy plants, were thrown out by the States after having been adopted.
