Savings needed at Guernsey Post says politician

Unless Guernsey's postal services are scaled back, charges will have to go up, according to an island politician.

Deputy Peter Gillson, a member of the Commerce and Employment Department, said that was the decision that needed to be made.

He is asking the public for views on how to make savings, including reducing deliveries or closing post offices.

Deputy Gillson said the consultation was aimed at finding out what service level the public would "be happy with".

He said a drop in the volume of ordinary post meant islanders had a choice between increases in charges or the loss of some services.

Guernsey Post has agreed with its industry regulator to cut its cost by £3m over the next three years.
