Guernseyman honoured for bravery in Afghanistan

A Guernseyman serving in the Royal Marines has been honoured for his outstanding bravery in Afghanistan.

Alex Tostevin, 21, was shot in the head while on duty in Sangin in July 2010.

The bullet skirted the inside of his helmet and he fell to the floor but he dismissed his wound as "just a little scratch" and got up to return fire.

This allowed two of his comrades to get to safety. His citation for a Mention in Despatches said: "Tostevin remained steadfast at his sentry position."

The citation continued: "He only sought medical assistance once the patrol was out of danger, by which time he was suffering with deep shock."

Marine Tostevin said he was "over the moon" when he heard the news and felt very privileged.
