Guernsey teachers decide not to join national strike

The Guernsey branches of two teaching unions have announced they will not join their UK counterparts in a strike.

Teachers in England and Wales are among up to 750,000 public sector workers planning to strike on Thursday over changes to public sector pensions.

In a joint statement, the island's NUT and NASUWT branches said: "Guernsey pensions are not under threat."

The statement said the unions were "fortunate to work closely with education... in negotiating pensions."

It said: "Agreement was reached in previous negotiations to increase the retirement age for new teachers and raise the contribution rate for all."

However the two unions advised members "to check their pension provision carefully before taking up a teaching position in England."
