Call for air quality regulations in Guernsey

Guernsey's Environmental Health Unit is asking the States to introduce strict regulation on air quality.

The unit has monitored air quality for about 20 years.

It has identified the bottom of Fountain Street in St Peter Port, Bulwer Avenue and other areas in St Sampson as potential trouble spots.

Val Cameron, the unit's director, said they felt now was the time for action and a report would be submitted towards the end of the year.

She said: "What we will be proposing to the States is that we actually introduce air quality standards for a wide priority of parameters, dusts or gases, just to ensure air standards are met and we maintain good air quality for local residents."

Ms Cameron said the proposals may include the introduction of licensing for industrial companies to ensure they comply with safe standards.
