Guernsey and Jersey could share data protection commissioner

A single data protection commissioner could be introduced for the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey.

Guernsey's Home Department and Jersey's Chief Executive's office have commissioned a review to examine the proposal and will report in September.

Paul Whitfield, the chief officer of Guernsey's Home Department, said: "There will be savings, but ultimately it is about improving service."

Guernsey's current commissioner, Peter Harris, is to retire on 30 September.

But a department spokesperson said this date could be extended in the event of the States rejecting the combination of the roles.

They are scheduled to debate the report at a meeting on 28 September.

Tom Gales, Jersey's deputy chief executive, said the move would "offer both islands... a greater degree of resilience and experience to the wider data protection issues that the Channel Islands face".
