Union boss backs changes to Guernsey States departments

Mr Freestone said assurances had been given that compulsory redundancies would be a last resort

Changes to the administration and IT services of States departments have been backed by a union boss.

Ed Freestone, President of the Association of Guernsey Civil Servants, said he supported the changes if compulsory redundancies did not occur.

Mr Freestone said assurances had been given, although it had previously been said that up to 50 jobs could be cut.

He said: "If it makes doing our jobs easier... we're going to say 'this is the right thing to do'."

Guernsey's Treasury and Resources department plans to centralise administration and IT services as part of the island's financial transformation programme.

The plans will be discussed by the States in October.
