Guernsey taxi drivers able to work again

  • Published

Six taxi drivers have been allowed to return to work while background checks are completed, the Environment Department has said.

The drivers had not been issued with new operating licences on 1 January as Criminal Records Bureau checks, carried out in the UK, had not been completed.

It left them unable to work on New Year's Eve, one of their busiest days.

The department provided no response to criticism it had not given drivers the 80 days needed to secure the checks.

It said in view of the problems it had "devised the means for conditioning permits for taxi drivers whose disclosure certificates have been delayed".
