Guernsey dog tax tag scheme could be expanded

A scheme to issue dog owners with tags for their pets' collars could be extended across Guernsey.

This year the Parish of St Martin started to give out the tags to residents who had paid the £10 dog tax, which is required annually.

Parish officials said they hoped the move would shame the estimated 30% of people who do not pay into doing so.

Senior Constable Richard Strappini said there had been some interest in the scheme from the other nine parishes.

He said: "It sounds as if the other parishes are starting to think about it seriously."

Anyone not paying the annual tax, which has to be paid for any dog over the age of six months, faces a fine of up to £500.
