Guernsey deputy calls for overseas aid increase

A Guernsey politician has said he hopes to increase the amount the island's government spends on overseas aid.

The Policy Council has said due to current "fiscal uncertainties" it was not proposing any increase to the current levels of funding.

Deputy Mike Hadley has proposed an extra £250,000 be allocated to the budget for overseas aid.

He has suggested the money could come from savings made in the Policy Council's budget.

In 2010 the island spent £2.5m on overseas aid.

That was £11.5m short of the UN target of 0.7% of Gross National Income, which the States has previously discussed as a possible target for overseas aid for the island.

Deputy Hadley's proposal and those made by the Policy Council are due to be debated next week.
