Traders call for MoT tests for Guernsey vehicles

The chairman of the Guernsey Motor Traders' Association has called for MoT tests to be introduced to the island.

Iain Carse said he feared the current lack of vehicle testing could lead to deaths caused by unroadworthy Guernsey vehicles, both locally and abroad.

He said the States of Guernsey seemed to believe there was no evidence that MoT tests led to a decrease in the number of road accidents.

Guernsey's Environment Department has not yet commented on the issue.

Earlier in the week Jersey's government confirmed that compulsory MoT tests were to be brought in in the future.

Mr Carse said he felt that pressure from the UK could see the measures introduced locally.

He added that there were a number of unsafe vehicles in Guernsey that he felt should not be allowed on the island's roads.

Vehicle tests such as MoTs are not currently required by law in Guernsey.
