Guernsey hotelier Simon Vermeulen criticises 'employ locals' idea

A Guernsey hotelier has criticised the island's Social Security Department over a call to employ local people.

Simon Vermeulen, of La Grande Mare hotel, said the department's plea was impractical for hospitality jobs.

He said he would find it difficult to find people with the right attitude among Guernsey's unemployed.

Deputy Mark Dorey, the Social Security Minister, said in January that businesses should employ local people to help curb rising unemployment.

Mr Vermeulen said that in his experience, local people were reluctant to work in hotels and restaurants.

He said he found guest workers were often better-qualified.
