Guernsey's most revered army hero, Sir Isaac Brock, is to feature on stamps released jointly by Guernsey Post and Canada Post.

The military general, born in St Peter Port in 1769, is often credited with saving Upper Canada from defeat by the US during the War of 1812.

One of the stamps will be attached to another bearing a portrait of the Native American leader Tecumseh, an ally of Brock's during the conflict.

The stamps went on sale from 15 June.

Brock was killed during the Battle of Queenston Heights on 13 October, 1812.

Unusually for the time, he was leading his men from the front as he was shot.

Tecumseh, a leader of the Shawnee people, was killed the following year at the Battle of the Thames.

Dawn Gallienne, from Guernsey Post, said: "We wanted to commemorate the bicentennial year of the War of 1812 by depicting two men who remain symbols of Canadian patriotism."
