Mulkerrin backs Guernsey education changes

Moves to improve secondary education in Guernsey have the backing of the author of a critical review into the system.

The Education Department has announced it has achieved 22 of the 49 recommendations set out in the review carried out by Denis Mulkerrin.

Mr Mulkerrin said the changes meant the department was moving in the right direction.

However, he said the challenge would be implementing further changes while dealing with the need to make savings.

Among the recommendations put in place are the completion of a public consultation into the secondary school selection system and the introduction of regular visits by political board members to schools.

The department has put work on two of the recommendations on hold for the time being.

These are, looking at setting up eight-year housing licences for teachers, which has been delayed until the resolution of debate on the Housing Control Law, and training for school governors, which has been put off until the structure of the governing bodies has been agreed.
