Guernsey Community Foundation gives £10k to projects

A programme supporting children and families affected by drug and alcohol abuse is among five Guernsey projects awarded a total of £10,000 in grants.

Drug Concern was given £4,000 in the second round of the Guernsey Community Foundation's year-long grant scheme.

Dave Warr, vice chairman of the foundation, said: "We received a large number of requests for funding for some really impressive community projects."

He said 23 applications for funds totalling £168,111 had been received.

Drug Concern's three-year programme aims to reduce the risk of children becoming addicted in later life.

The other awards included £2,500 for travel expenses and volunteer training for the Marlins Special Swimmers Club and £1,250 towards the Arts Commission's Network Club.

They also included £1,250 for equipment and travel expenses for disadvantaged young athletes through the Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club and £1,000 for volunteer expenses for Caritas Community Charitable Trust.

Mr Warr said: "The demand for funding in the voluntary sector is still huge and we are pleased to be able to award funds to support the hard work that is being done every day in the community."

The third round of the quarterly grants programme is due to open on Saturday, 1 September 2012.
