Guernsey States streaming could be debated

Moves to allow the States of Guernsey's meetings to be streamed online could be debated before the end of the year.

Currently islanders can only listen by tuning in to BBC Guernsey's 1116MW or sitting in the public gallery.

A draft report has been sent to different areas of the States for consultation before the final version is presented to deputies.

If the report is approved, a States resolution would be revoked to allow the meetings to be streamed.

Mark Lempriere, deputy chief officer of the Home Department, said: "It was a resolution of the States in 1983 which allowed the media to have audio from States debates, but not to televise it and obviously online wasn't an option at that time anyway.

"We've been in consultation with the media and there's an interest there and particularly since the new house has been sitting there's been a renewed interest politically for this to happen as well."

He said as long as the consultation responses were returned fairly quickly the debate would take place in 2012.
