Guernsey milk production affected by weather

Milk production in Guernsey has been affected by sustained wind and rain, a farmer has said.

James Watts, of the Guernsey Farmers' Association, said pressure had been put on the island's dairy industry by the weather during 2012.

He said crops had suffered, meaning extra feed would need to be brought in for cattle over the winter, costing farmers an additional 25%.

Mr Watts said the effects of the weather could be felt for six months.

He said milk production could drop as a result of poor quality feed, leaving farmers in difficult financial situations.

He added the protein level and creaminess of milk could also be affected as a result.

Currently Guernsey law prohibits the importation of fresh milk, leaving local milk as the only option available to buy.
