International professionals have been turned away from the Guernsey International Chess Festival, organisers said.
Guernsey Chess Federation said the festival could no longer cater for all applicants as the tournament's reputation had grown in recent years.
About 120 players from around the world, including the UK ladies champion, will play over the next week.
The 2012 festival is the island's 38th tournament.
