Guernsey Brewery apartments plan approved by politicians

The former Guernsey Brewery site will be turned in to 33 residential properties

A former brewery in St Peter Port will be turned in to 33 apartments, after redevelopment plans were approved.

All five members of the Environment Department approved Comprop's plan for the site, which also includes proposals for underground parking.

Five people raised objections against the scheme at an open planning meeting.

A Comprop spokesperson said the company aimed to be on site within a year, and to complete construction within three years.

Steve Marie, managing director of Comprop, said he was "delighted" that the application had been approved.

Objections relating to the height of the proposed building and its appearance have been raised by nearby residents.

Steve Black, who lives near the site, said: "It's right next to the rural area, which is an area of high landscape quality."

He added: "They've got these... Benidorm-style balconies on the front that look absolutely awful."

Concerns were also raised by a representative of La Societe Guernesiaise, who said the brewery site was in a conservation area.

He urged politicians and developers to bear that in mind, and to ascertain exactly what constitutes conservation.

Debbie Joyce, who designed the planned building, said efforts would be made to record and store items of historical and architectural interest.
