Guernsey States says 'no more money' for bus service

  • Published

There is no more money available to improve the bus service, Guernsey's Environment Department has said.

In a statement the department said the current state of the island's finances made it unlikely it would invest more.

Deputy Matt Fallaize described the bus service as a "shambles" and said the current contract was not working and should be ended early.

He also said the States of Guernsey's relationship with CT Plus was "doomed to fail".

Earlier a number of routes and services had to be cancelled due to high staff turnover and illness.

The week started with a wildcat strike by drivers and a reduced timetable while drivers work to rule.

A driver who did not want to be named said they were taking action over "working conditions, working hours and communications with management".

A spokesman for the Environment Department said ending the contract with CT Plus early would leave Guernsey with the possibility of having no service at all.

Fergus Dunlop from Guernsey's Bus Users Group said passengers needed to have faith in the future of the service.
