A prominent Guernsey grower said he has had to make staff redundant due to poor weather conditions.

The Guernsey Clematis Nursery will lay off some of its full-time and seasonal workers this autumn as it struggles with falling sales.

Owner Raymond Evison, who has won more than 20 gold medals at RHS Chelsea, said demand for bulbs to plant had fallen due to the poor weather.

He said he was not able to reveal how many people would be made redundant.

Mr Evison said 40% of his staff were from Guernsey, 30% from Madeira and 30% from Latvia.

Guernsey had its wettest year for more than a decade in 2012, with more than two fifths of rain falling in the final three months of the year.
