Bomb detonated on the island of Lihou

A World War Two shell has been detonated after it was discovered on the island of Lihou.

The 75mm mortar was welded to a rock and police believe it may have been hidden by seaweed for decades.

Guernsey Police's bomb squad was alerted and the device was safely detonated below the high-water mark.

Insp Terry Coule said: "This type of ordnance is common on Lihou, as the area was used as a firing range by the German forces."
