Guernsey GP limit could be removed

A limit on the number of GPs working in Guernsey could be removed as it may break the island's competition law.

The current limit of 42 full-time doctors was agreed more than 30 years ago and is based on a ratio of one doctor to 1,600 people.

A consultation on regulating medical practitioners has been started after concerns raised by the regulator CICRA.

Changes to the current set-up, which also controls which GPs can access some services, will need States approval.

The services are pathology and X-ray services for primary care practitioners and hospital admission rights for those working in secondary care.

The regulator has suggested the current limit on numbers could stop free, open and fair competition in the island.

The law applies to all commercial activities and prohibits anti-competitive behaviour. It is also designed to stop firms from abusing a dominant position in a market - and some mergers and acquisitions need to be approved by the regulator.
