Planners want to make more of the town's character

Plans to regenerate Ramsey have been given the provisional go-ahead by the Isle of Man Government.

Proposals involve improving the look of the town, making more of its character and giving it a central "heart".

The scheme, which is part of a plan to regenerate the whole island, also aims to reduce traffic and improve parking in the town centre.

The Ramsey Regeneration Committee submitted the plans to the government after consultation with residents.

They were agreed by the Chief Minister's Regeneration Steering Group last week.

The committee will now develop detailed proposals for the area around the Court House, Bourne Place, Market Hill, East Street and Market Place and the Lanes joining Parliament Street to the Quayside.

Ramsey Regeneration Committee chairman, Allan Bell MHK, said: "This agreement is a great step forward.

"We can now get on with developing major regeneration proposals which will help to make Ramsey more vibrant, bright, lively and colourful."

Chairman of Ramsey Commissioners, Captain Nigel Malpass, commented: "I am delighted with the positive progress made so far and grateful for the many residents who have had a positive input in taking the Regeneration of Ramsey forward".
