Hundreds of unemployed youngsters in the Isle of Man have turned down the chance to attend a government-run course to help prepare them for work.

Some 450 people aged between 16 and 24 were invited to attend a five-day workshop but only eight took part.

The 'Prepare for Work' Course helps youngsters with interview techniques and other communication skills.

Minister for Economic Development Allan Bell said: "I find the response to this opportunity very disappointing indeed".

"It must be understood that Government can only offer support - it is up to young people to take responsibility for their own life chances." he added.

The unemployment rate on the Isle of Man is currently 1.7% whereas in the United Kingdom it is 7.9%

The next Prepare for Work course on the Isle of Man is scheduled between 28 March to 1 April 2011.
