Mayor of Douglas Ritchie McNicholl will turn on the lights

Douglas Mayor Ritchie McNicholl has switched on this year's Christmas lights outside the Town Hall on Ridgeway Street.

The Douglas Town Band performed Carols from 18:30 GMT supported by Manx singer Rebecca Forrest.

The proposed lantern parade organised by the Isle of Man Arts Council has been cancelled due to the high winds.

The section of Ridgeway Street between Lord Street and Victoria Street was closed for two hours from 18:00 GMT.

Members of the Dick Whittington cast, this year's pantomime at the Gaiety Theatre, also gave a performance.

Council leader David Christian said: "Christmas is a crucial time for Douglas traders and the council, in association with the private sector, is committed to offering its fullest support to a spectacle that will attract visitors to the town and encourage people to shop locally."

Late-night shopping will also start in Douglas on Thursday evening.
