A post-mortem examination on a body "dredged up" by a fishing boat several miles from north coast of the Isle of Man will take place later.
The body was discovered by fishermen on Friday evening.
The Isle of Man force is liaising with police in the UK and Ireland.
A police spokesman said: "The body is badly decomposed and so far we have been unable to determine its gender or for how long it had been in the water."
