The mayor of Douglas has switched on the town's Christmas lights.

Hundreds of people took part in a countdown before Carol Malarkey turned on the 6.5 miles (10km) of lights.

The cast of Babes in the Wood, this year's pantomime at the Gaiety Theatre, also performed, along with the Douglas town band and singer Rebecca Forrest.

The switch-on marked the start of late-night shopping in Douglas and the signalled the opening of the European market.

The market, which includes dozens of food and drink stalls from France, Italy, Germany, Greece and Belgium alongside local stall holders, will be open until 29 November.

Douglas Borough Council leader David Christian said: "Snow is forecast and Christmas will start tonight."
