Privileges Committee calls for fewer Jersey senators

Jersey could have fewer senators if plans for reform of the Jersey's States are agreed.

Jersey's Privileges and Procedures Committee (PPC), which is examining changes to the political system, wants to cut the number of the politicians from 12 to eight.

It says fewer senators will give islanders a more meaningful vote.

The PPC also wants one election every four years for all politicians, starting in 2015.

Jersey States is composed of 53 elected independent members, 12 constables, 12 senators and 29 deputies.

Senators are currently elected for six-year terms and constables and deputies are elected for three-year terms.
