St Helier's 'ugliest building' could be demolished

The minister called on the States to demolish Minden Place car park instead of prolonging its life

A St Helier car park described by Jersey's planning minister as "one of the ugliest buildings in town" could be demolished.

Senator Freddie Cohen said the Minden Place car park only had about 10 years of life left under its existing design.

He called on States members to demolish the car park early instead of prolonging its life.

The minister added that the proposals were "designed to improve the quality of this part of town".

The north-of-town "masterplan" will see a large park, shopping and residential developments in the area.

Plans also include provision for car parking spaces for up to 850 cars across multiple areas.

The current car park at Gas Place has always been earmarked to go under the plans for the new town park.

The Le Masurier site will hold 100 car parking spaces, the Jersey Brewery site up to 100, an underground car park at Ann Court will hold 285.

There will also be 125 spaces at the Jersey Gas site.
