Taxi marshal scheme in St Helier gets funding

A sponsor has come forward to cover the costs of a taxi marshal scheme in St Helier on Friday nights in November.
The funding came less than a week after it was announced that the scheme would be cut down to just one night of cover a week.
Marshals had patrolled the taxi queues at the Weighbridge on Friday and Saturday nights since 2008.
The scheme was to be cut to one night a week as organisers struggled to get funding to cover the costs.
Colin Russell, chairman of the safer St Helier partnership which looks after the scheme, said local construction company Grafters had pledged the money.
With financial hardship hitting the partnership, the money was no longer there to keep the service on both nights.
Mr Russell said the scheme had had amazing feedback from taxi drivers, their customers and the police as well as local businesses.
