Jersey students could see university fees frozen

Tuition fees for Jersey students studying in the UK could be frozen for the next academic year.

UK MPs are due to vote on a possible trebling of university fees to £9,000-a-year later.

Discussions with the Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man Governments about any imminent rise have already taken place.

A joint delegation from the islands have been meeting UK government officials to secure a deal to keep fee levels the same.

Jersey's education department said it was not clear how this would impact on students from the island.

The assistant director of education, David Greenwood, said the islands hoped to keep current fee arrangements frozen.

He said this would give them more time for negotiations on fees from 2013.

Jersey's education minister, Deputy James Reed, said the States was fighting for the best possible deal for Jersey students and needed to ensure that islanders could continue to benefit from a university education.
