Duty puts up fuel, tobacco and alcohol costs in Jersey

It is hoped the rise in duty will discourage islanders from smoking and drinking

The cost of alcohol, tobacco products and fuel has risen in Jersey.

The new import duties [tax] for 2011 came into effect at midnight as part of the States budget.

The tax on alcohol went up by more than 6%, cigarettes by 11%, while fuel has risen by two pence a litre.

Smokers will pay 35p more for a pack of cigarettes, while a pint of beer will be 2p dearer, a bottle of wine 7p more, and 58p more for a litre of spirits.

The tax rises were rejected for 2010, but passed in this year's budget debate.

Treasury and Resources Minister Philip Ozouf said the increase would help improve islanders' health by discouraging them from drinking and smoking.
