Jersey minister fights Green Lanes speed rise

The speed limit in Jersey's Green Lanes should stay at 15mph says Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean.

Priority is given to walkers, cyclists and horse riders on the island's 50-mile network of country lanes.

A survey in 2010 suggested many islanders want to increase the speed limit to 20mph.

But Mr Maclean says a third of all staying visitors come to Jersey to walk and raising the limit would do "irreparable damage" to tourism.

A report to the States of Jersey said 51% of 839 people questioned wanted the maximum speed limit in Green Lanes raised to 20mph while 31% wanted to see it retained at 15mph.

The States is due to discuss the issue on 18 January.
