Jersey Water increases cost of water by 1.5%

Jersey Water has announced its tariffs for 2011 and the cost of water for people without a water meter will rise by 1.5% from April 2011.

The price of metered water remains the same as 2010 and standing charges will stay the same.

The company is aiming to have 90% of homes on a water meter within the next four years, it is currently about 50%.

Jersey Water have kept the price of water at or below the rate of inflation for the ninth consecutive year.

Jersey Water managing director, Howard Snowden, said the firm decided to keep metered water at the same rate to encourage people to switch.

He said: "In order to encourage customers to switch to paying for water by meter we have decided to absorb the modest price increase for metered customers.

"Many customers will save money by having a water meter fitted. Increased metering also helps the company keeps bills down by reducing leakage and the need to collect, treat and distribute water that would otherwise be wasted."
